New methods for varnish removal - a comparative study
Abstract
In recent years, new varnish removal methods have emerged in conservation, with two notable approaches: the tissue-gel composite method, involving gel-coated tissue material pressed onto varnished surfaces for simultaneous dissolution and binding, and the use of Evolon® CR textile saturated with solvent. Evolon® CR offers an alternative to gels and tissue-gel composites, aiming to eliminate residue from gel thickening agents and the need for mechanical cleaning, while enabling the use of non-polar solvents in a bound form.
The purpose of this study is to examine the advantages and disadvantages of these materials and to compare their properties and capabilities. The study employed a literature review, a case study, and a model-based investigation to compare the two methods. XRF (X-ray fluorescence), photographic documentation, and microscopy were utilized for the analysis of the experiments.
The results of the study demonstrate that by using Evolon® CR as a solvent carrier, the mechanically demanding step of cleaning can be avoided. The material can be saturated with a controlled amount of solvent in a manner similar to gels. Different levels of ethanol saturation and varying application durations yield different results. Additionally, the application time also affects the tissue-gel composite method, which requires a longer duration to achieve effectiveness compared to the evaluated material. The tissue-gel method removes the most paint material, particularly when combined with swab cleaning. However, Evolon® CR leaves residues on the reverse side of the canvas, which is not observed with the tissue-gel composite method. Evolon® CR exhibits superior performance when used in combination with non-polar solvents compared to the tissue-gel composite method.
