Operationsteamets perioperativa kommunikation.
Perioperative communication of the surgical team. An observational study on adherence to the Surgical Safety Checklist 2.0
Abstract
Bakgrund: Operationssjukvård är komplex och avancerad. Flera olika yrkeskategorier
däribland WHO Checklista för säker kirurgi.

Other description
Background: Surgical care is complexed and advanced. Several different professions
collaborate, in their own areas of competence, within the perioperative care of the patient. The
perioperative care shall be patient centered and the surgical team shall work for patient safety.
To be able to provide patient safety, good communication is needed among the team members.
Based on this, several different communication tools have been developed, including WHO
Surgical safety checklist. This checklist has been modified and adapted in Sweden, by the name
Surgical safety checklist 2.0 and the purpose is to further increase patients’ safety according to
the Swedish surgical health care system. Aim: To identify the use of the Surgical safety
checklist 2.0 by the operating team in the perioperative care. With questions as how many times
it is correctly accomplished and if there is any difference between surgical and orthopedic
operations. Method: The study is performed as a non-participating structured observation
where observational protocols has been used. Results: 20 operations have been observed and
were evenly distributed between surgical and orthopedic operations. The result shows that the
Surgical safety checklist 2.0 was used during all the operations, though not correctly performed.
The result shows that some of the individual parts were correctly performed. There was no
significant difference between the surgical and orthopedic operations, although there were
differences in type of distractions that arose during the checklist. Conclusion: Adherence to
the correct use of the Surgical safety checklist 2.0 on the observed surgical unit was difficult to
maintain, mostly due to distractions in the surgical team or parts being missed to be performed.
