Nattluckor : en studie om invändiga fönsterluckors konstruktion och funktion
Folding shutters – a study of the construction and function of historic interior shutters
Abstract
This bachelor's thesis is about historic interior shutters known as boxing or folding shutters. This type of shutter, mostly common in Europe during the 18th and 19th century, is mainly found in the homes of the upper class. Even though interior shutters being a reoccurring feature in historic architecture the subject is not widely documented, particularly in Swedish literature.
The aim of this study is to provide answers regarding the construction and installation of interior window shutters. In studies of literature the knowledge from written sources, such as old manuals of carpentry, were collected and summarized in a documentation, presenting remaining knowledge still accessible today. Additionally, field studies were made on shutters at Stora Ek mansion, Mariestad, and Ekenäs castle, Linköping. A total of four shutters were examined for the documentation on ways of doing in actual practice. The studies resulted in identification of typical ways of construction and installation of interior window shutters and presented here in a categorised documentation. Results of the study shows that historic interior shutters were commonly built in framework and were hinged. This gathered documentation of the historic detail, interior shutters, is presented in this paper as a knowledge basis for future studies, as well as for maintenance and restoration activities needed to protect our cultural heritage.
