This thesis is about the handicraft paintings in stairwells from the 1940s to the 1950s. It is done by documentation and identification of the style characteristic of the time in colouration and technicue, which were used during this period. A summary of the report by the factors, which influenced the formality and the handicraft of the paintings, can be seen in the beginning of this composition. A case study is part of the work, which has been used as a foundation to give the answers to questions which affects the handicraft paintings. This composition referes to literature, which has been publicated in the subject, together with literature which affect the subject in some case. During my work, facts about decorative painting, which have been verified, have appeared. Understanding about the value of the paintings from this time is tiny, but even these stairwells have historical and handicraft qualities, which testifies a great care and consideration for the construction. One part of this composition is to illustrate and awake an interest about the stairwells of this time: For maintenance and a remake of the original character. What has appeared during my work is that the factors which influenced the shaping of the stairwells paintings during this period were several: New ideas about housing which came along with the functionalism. Even political targets, which were established in order to build houses for public. The handicraft paintings occurred to the early 1950s. They were made on a carefully shaped surface, which could have different structures. The type of colorant was usually oil paint and limestone paint. The coloration was often modified white or light colour in order to harmonize with the shape of the stairwell. A change of colors could appear, with a darker colour under the bannister and a brighter colour over it. Even a backdrop could be painted or decorated with wallpaper in darker colour. Some paintings of decoration with figurative paintings were made by artists and during the 1950s paintings decoration with abstract geometrical patterns appeared. This is verified in the case study at Raketgatan nr 11.sv
