Abstract
In the study, the purpose has been to investigate how a retail chain in the grocery trade goes about competence provision, competence strategies and employees' perceived development opportunities in relation to the digitization taking place in society at large. We have performed a qualitative research approach and interviewed both employees, managers and external experts in the field. The results from the empirical evidence show a contrast in perceived core competences from the employees' and managers' perspective, compared to what research has shown on current future needs. Regarding competence supply, it can be emphasized that the company plans and develops in the short term to meet the changing world that is within the industry. Competence development was believed, according to employees with responsibility, to bring greater room for action, while employees on the floor were recipients of repetitive tasks. This prevented a further competence development where, among other things, future competence requirements, such as technical skills, were not trained in more detail for - but which are considered to be of importance in the future. Our final recommendation lands in a new concept according to the Utmana model, where employees are seen as actors with niche skills to meet the changing demands of customers.
