Abstract

Description

Background: Sometimes an operation leads to unnecessary suffering for the patient, such as post-operative wound infections, hypothermia and pressure- and nerve damage. Research shows that there is a connection between these complications and a long operating time. To avoid these, more knowledge is needed about factors that can make the operation time shorter. Aim: The purpose is to map factors that enable the operating theatre nurse to work efficiently during a surgical procedure. Method: Qualitative method has been used where a survey with open self-constructed questions was asked. Collected data has been analyzed using a conventional content analysis. Results: Based on the operating theatre nurse's experience, it emerged that good planning, plenty of time for preparation and recovery are factors that positively influence the operation time. Good communication where collaboration works well and where there is sufficient competence in the team are influencing factors. A work environment characterized by positivity and participation generates effective work. When these factors are not met, it leads to prolonged operation time. Strategies developed by the operating theatre nurse are to be responsive, present and contribute to a good working environment. Also to have readiness for action and the ability to take initiative in the event of unexpected happenings. Furthermore, it is about taking a professional position and acquiring knowledge to increase efficiency for future interventions. Conclusion: The result highlights that it is important to have good preparations in order to work efficiently and avoid materials needing to be retrieved during an ongoing operation. It is fundamental to have well-functioning teamwork and a good psychosocial work environment. Two operating theatre nurses in the sterile zone are perceived to facilitate advanced procedures and it can make a difference if an operating theatre nurse replaces the scrub nurse for a time efficient operation. The result confirms the importance of the operating theatre nurse's competence in the operating theatre.
