Abstract
As interest in traditional building methods and sustainable materials grows, linseed oil putty
has gained attention in building conservation and carpentry. This study investigates the use
of linseed oil putty as an alternative to, for example, a plaster in indoor carpentry, focusing
on its properties such as drying time, subsidence and crack formation. The study also
explores the impact of different application methods and pre-treatments on the performance
of the putty. By analyzing these characteristics, the study aims to provide practical insights
for using linseed oil putty in traditional building methods.
The research includes experiments with different types of linseed oil putty, both
commercially available and homemade, and examines their performance in various
conditions. Interviews with experienced craftsmen provide additional practical insights.
Despite mentions in literature about linseed oil putty as a potential material for filling gaps
and shrinkage cracks for example, detailed descriptions of its application methods and
performance are lacking. This study seeks to fill this knowledge gap by exploring the
effectiveness of linseed oil putty on indoor carpentry.
