Abstract
This thesis investigates how cinematic aesthetic strategies, such as color, camerawork, and sound, contribute to evoking a sense of presence and everyday experience in the films of Sean Baker. By analyzing Tangerine (2015), The Florida Project (2017), and Red Rocket (2021), this study explores how Sean Baker’s filmography prioritizes sensory intensity over a traditional narrative perspective. Using phenomenology and affect theory, specifically the works of Vivian Sobchack, Laura U. Marks, and Brian Massumi, the analysis demonstrates how saturated palettes and haptic visuality create a physical connection between the spectator and the marginalized environments depicted. The results show that Baker’s unique position as an auteur is defined by a combination of social-realist authenticity and a colorful aesthetic, resulting in a form of realism that is felt physiologically rather than merely observed.
