Abstract

Totalt inkluderades sjutton vetenskapliga artiklar i litteraturöversikten.

Description

Background: In the complex operating room environment, the interprofessional team collaborates to ensure good and safe care. Communication is seen as a prerequisite for the operating team’s collaboration to work. Deficiency in communication can cause errors and misunderstandings which can threaten patient safety and cause patient harm. It is important to explore the experiences of communication from operating room nurses to get insight into how it can affect the perioperative work. Aim: The aim was to explore operating room nurses’ experiences of communication within the operating room team. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted with a qualitative approach. In the analysis Graneheim and Lundman’s model for qualitative content analysis was used. In total, seventeen research articles were included. Result: The analysis resulted in three categories with corresponding subcategories. The main categories were Individual and relational conditions for communication, The impact of team dynamics on communication and Structures and organizational frameworks for communication. The first category showed that individual characteristics and abilities influenced how communication within the operating team was percieved. The second category highlighted team dynamic factors, such as hierarchy and roles, affecting the operating room nurse’s ability to communicate and secure patient safety. The third category showed that structures and organizational frameworks shaped communication through communication tools, communication ways, barriers and environmental factors. Conclusion and clinical implications: Operating room nurses experience that communication within the operating room team is affected by aspects related to individual, team and organizational levels. These aspects can promote or hinder communication. The experiences of communication provide an insight into how it is experienced as well as the deficiencies or areas for improvement that exist. Furthermore, further research should identify ways to reduce communication gaps to provide safer patient care.
