Abstract

This thesis explores the dynamics of internal communication within hybrid work environments, focusing on the dual aspects of challenges and opportunities faced by leaders. Accelerated by the pandemic, the shift towards hybrid work has helped the adoption of digital communication tools such as Teams, Zoom and Slack. Digital communication has facilitated flexibility and remote work but have also proposed significant challenges, especially in maintaining informal interactions and personal connections among team members. Using a qualitative approach, the research included 20 interviews with 13 leaders and 7 followers in Swedish companies to provide a comprehensive perspective. The findings point out how digital and face-to-face communication influence leadership, team cohesion, engagement and the overall dynamics within the project. While digital tools enhance efficiency and clarity, they often lack the personal touch that is essential for creating strong interpersonal relationships. Leaders must navigate digital communication while creating opportunities for face-to-face communication in order to sustain team spirit and collaboration. Finally, this study highlights the importance of providing flexibility and improving work-life balance in hybrid work environments. However, it also underscores the importance of understanding how communication is perceived and experienced by leaders in both digital and face-to-face elements of remote and office based work. The research highlights that leaders' perception of communication could influence the development of a supportive and engaging work environment that effectively navigates the opportunities and challenges of hybrid work.
