Abstract

In a Lonely Place and Johnny Guitar, both films directed by Nicholas Ray, explore masculinity from different perspectives with different results. The essay will apply the theories of masculinities by Raewynn Connell on the films text and the actors playing the lead characters, to show how Ray's movies problematises different ideas of masculinity and how it can be reformed.
