Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this literature review is to analyse what previous research highlights about the social media use of young people between 13 and 18 years old who live with neurodevelopmental disorders. This review is a structured literature review that encompasses 16 articles identified through database searches, reference and citation searches, and one supervisor's recommendation. The resulting articles were then analysed using a method inspired by thematic analysis. Codes were identified in the results of the articles included. The codes were then classified under four main themes: Online habits, Making relationships easier, 3 Experienced risks, and Support and control. Sub-categories were also identified, under the theme of making relationships easier: friendship, communication, and confidence. Under the theme of experienced risks, the sub-categories were: unpleasant situations, being misled, and associated risks. This review has shown that young people with neurodevelopmental disorders experienced both opportunities and drawbacks in using social media. Social media was seen as an important meeting place for young people who felt more comfortable communicating online and felt that they could be themselves to a greater degree compared to socialising offline. This review has also shown that young people with neurodevelopmental disorders have been victimised and exposed to unpleasant experiences on social media, and that they often experience difficulties in knowing how to handle these situations.
