Abstract

This thesis is a study in the construction of the grills in the double doors that is located in the cultural reserve Vallby Sörgården main building in Skövde county. In a previous survey the discovery of a problem with the joinery of the grills where made. The shape and measurements of the grills made it impossible to fit together in the meetings. By examining the grills in the double doors in Vallby, a series of drawings and craft experiments resulted in an understanding of the construction of the grills. The grills were divided into three parts, the middle, upper and lower parts. However, the upper and lower are identical to each other so I did not make two separate studies of them. The conclusion of a possible method in how the middle part might have been made in was a method where you make a counter profile in the meetings to join them together. In the upper and lower parts, the 45° mitre needed to be deeper than usual in a joint like this. These methods removed the obstacles in the shape and measurements of the grills. Through the craft experiments a method to be able to make grills with this design was discovered using both modern tools and hand tools. To be able to date the doors and maybe find out who had made them, a study of the farmers' diaries was made. However, the diaries only contained notes regarding the farm animals and the farm production. But the chance to sit in the main house looking through the diaries gave me an understanding of how they lived and worked on the farm.
