Abstract

This study is based on literature and archival research, field inventories, and communication with individuals connected in various ways to Hassle Säby. The estate has a long history dating back to 1360. Since the nineteenth century, Hassle Säby has experienced frequent changes in ownership, which have led to the subdivision of forest agricultural land and likely influenced the structure and plant composition of the park and garden as they appear today. The aim of this work is to investigate methods used in studies of historical parks and gardens in previous research. These methods are tested to examine what types of information they can reveal about the park and garden at Hassle Säby. The study also seeks to identify which methods proved most useful in this investigation as relevant information about such sites can be difficult to locate. The results may also support future research on similar parks and gardens.
