Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to examine how the current rehearsal space crisis affects the people who practice in rehearsal spaces provided by the adult education association called Studieförbund. The study explores the emotions of the rehearsal space users and how they articulate value in relation to the rehearsal spaces. Using affect theory, and the concepts of hegemony and pastoral power, we place the situation in a broader societal context of cultural practitioners and institutions, who are often questioned and viewed with suspicion in contemporary society. We analyze why the interviewees use instrumental arguments to describe the importance of rehearsal spaces. All of this comes down to a feeling of being incomprehensible among the rehearsal space users.
