Abstract
This study consists of 40 pages and its purpose is to investigate which sustainability strategies food wholesalers use to adapt to a more sustainable world. We hope that it can give both the public and stakeholders in the food wholesalers' value chain a clearer picture of how and why certain strategic decisions are made in this industry that is often invisible to society. The study's research approach is qualitative and is based primarily on the semi-structured interviews conducted with nine food wholesalers. Using three theories: legitimacy theory, institutional isomorphism and the Triple Bottom Line model, this study helps to fill the research gaps that previous research has not focused on, which is first introduced in the theory section and further applied in the analysis. These theories also formed the basis for how the interview questions were formulated, which was crucial for the result. The study's conclusion explains that there are several different reasons for which strategic decisions a food wholesaler makes. This is due to a combination of what is actually demanded by their stakeholders and the companies' capital. Some of the respondents said that they have an ambition to become more proactive in environmental sustainability but if it is not in demand and/or involves too much cost then it is not a priority, while others with greater capital had more opportunities to become more competitive.
