Abstract

Description

Background: Post-stroke fatigue (PSF) is a common complication after a stroke. The symptom involves chronic fatigue that affects several factors in a person's life, such as the individual's recovery, quality of life and opportunities for rehabilitation. Despite the fact that PSF is very common, it is often underdiagnosed and lacks treatment. Purpose: The purpose of this systematic literature review is to describe nursing interventions for managing fatigue in people who have had a stroke. Method: A literature study was conducted with a systematic search in the CINAHL and PubMed databases. Ten articles were relevant to study, these were analyzed using Bettany-Saltikov and McSherry's (2016) nine-step model. Result: The articles resulted in 3 main categories, these were: 1) Education, 2) Involving family and relatives and 3) Offering emotional and psychosocial support. Subcategories under each main category provide a more detailed description. Conclusion: PSF is a complex condition that requires coordinated efforts from healthcare providers, family members, and relatives. Person-centred care with emotional and psychosocial support is essential for managing fatigue. The specialist nurse could play a key role in tailoring care based on the patient’s unique needs. Person-centred care combined with patient education and support for self-care strategies, are central to improving the life situation for individuals living with PSF.
