Abstract
This bachelor thesis examines how Sofia Coppola’s three films, The Virgin Suicides (1999), The Beguiled (2017) and Priscilla (2023) portray young women’s experiences through narrative structure and visual style. The study explores how these experiences are shaped and sometimes withheld through cinematic techniques such as gaze, spatial organisation and mise-en-scène. The analysis is based on a qualitative film analysis and draws on feminist film theory, particularly Laura Mulvey, Mary Ann Doane, Anna Backman Rogers, Edward Branigan, Lucy Bolton and Giuliana Bruno. The results show that the films do not present female experiences as fully accessible, but as something fragmented, relational or gradually emerging. Rather than being explicitly explained, experience is conveyed through atmosphere, rhythm, and Visual composition. The study argues that Coppola’s films do not simply represent women’s experiences but explore the limits of how such experiences can be expressed in film.
