Abstract
This study examines why Swedish banks don’t offer services linked to cryptocurrencies and how private investors are affected by this. Further, the study examines what risks a private person has to consider if they want to invest in Bitcoin, and the pros and cons of the Bitcoin investment case. In order to answer these questions, interviews were conducted with people in the Swedish financial industry with previous knowledge of Bitcoin. The Swedish banks generally have a restrictive and cautious attitude when it comes to cryptocurrencies. This is partly due to the difficulty of complying with the laws on money laundering. Hence, private investors are forced to turn to lesser-known players. Since the market is not regulated this entails a number of risks. More investors want to include Bitcoin in their investment portfolio, but many of them lack the knowledge for the technique and therefore don't understand the reasons for fluctuations in price, which makes it easier to rely on the irrational part of the brain and make bad investment decisions.
