Abstract
This pilot study aims to explore lower secondary school students' experiences of playing the card game Biobalans as part of biology instruction. Biobalans is a newly developed card game where students build ecosystems and food chains. The study involved an intervention where traditional teaching was replaced by playing the card game. Following the session, some students and the regular teacher were interviewed. The results indicate that students generally appreciated the gaming session. They enjoyed the departure from routine, the opportunity for active participation, and the inclusion of competitive and puzzle elements. The game shows potential in creating learning situations. However, the main challenges were initiating gameplay and understanding the rules. Some students found it complicated and became frustrated when they didn't comprehend the instructions. For future studies, it would be interesting to explore alternative uses of the game cards to enhance learning and lower the threshold for understanding the game rules.
