Abstract
Background: In sports, groin injuries are common, and it is often the hip adductors that are affected. Groin injuries occur primarily in situations that include changes in direction, kicking or skating. Weakness in the hip adductors increases the risk of groin injury and preventive strength training is important to reduce the risk. From a physiotherapeutic perspective it is important to evaluate exercises continuously to offer the most effective training, both for preventive and rehabilitation purposes.
Aim: The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize the latest available research on the effectiveness of the Copenhagen adductor exercise (CAE) in increasing the strength of the hip adductors.
Methods: The literature search was performed in PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus. In addition, the reference lists of included studies were searched. The studies were reviewed and assessed according to methodological quality, systematic errors, clinical relevance and evidence value. Finally, the studies were assigned an evidence rating based on previous assessment.
Results: Nine studies were included, two of which assessed the cross-sectional area of adductor longus as the outcome measure. The remaining studies used eccentric strength in the hip adductors (EHAD) assessed with a handheld dynamometer (HD). Five studies showed a significant increase in EHAD in favor of the intervention group (IG) in group comparisons.
Conclusion: CAE is a well-applicable exercise to increase hip adductor strength. However, more research is needed to ensure adequate dosage of exercise to achieve increased strength. The effect of the exercise should also be investigated in populations other than young men playing football.
