Abstract

Using an ecological approach within a deep time perspective, the aim of this thesis is to re-examine human-environment relationships in small-scale societies, a topic that has often remained peripheral in archaeological research. To address this question, the analysis combines regional paleoenvironmental data with archaeological material from the Early to Middle Holo- cene Mesolithic settlement of Huseby klev (ca. 10,430–7560 cal BP) located on the island of Orust, in Bohuslän western Sweden. By applying perspectives from historical ecology and resilience theory, the study aims to develop a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between humans and their environment, as well as how small-scale human societies organized and adapted during periods of stress and environmental change.
