Abstract

Digitalisation has fundamentally transformed the conditions for leadership, particularly through the growing prevalence of remote and hybrid work. This bachelor’s thesis aims to explore how managers adapt their leadership in digital work environments and how they develop their competencies in digital leadership. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with nine managers from various industries and organisational levels. The findings show that managers adapt their leadership through revised communication routines, increased trust in employees, and a stronger emphasis on self-leadership. Physical presence is still considered important, especially when onboarding new employees and maintaining team cohesion. Several managers report challenges in identifying employees' needs and sustaining engagement at a distance. Competence development primarily occurs informally through practical experience and peer exchange, rather than formal training initiatives. While many managers feel confident in their current abilities, awareness of available training opportunities is low. The effects of digitalisation on leadership are perceived differently, some see a loss in leadership effectiveness, while others report increased efficiency and flexibility.
