Abstract
This thesis investigates how moulding planes with a glued side wall may have been made during the 1660s, based on a study of historical planes preserved at Skokloster Castle. Using a forensic perspective alongside theories of practical knowledge, tool marks, material orientation, and construction details were examined to develop a hypothetical operational sequence for manufacture. The proposed process was tested through a series of craft experiments in which planes were produced using hand tools. The results suggest a possible method of production and demonstrate how practice-based research can contribute to understanding pre-industrial craftsmanship and historical toolmaking processes.
