Robert Nilssons Väggrelief: En fallstudie

Abstract

This thesis focuses on a mounted wall relief by the artist Robert Nilsson that is located in the humanities faculty of Gothenburg university library. The artwork is damaged and in need of treatment. There is, however, very little documentation regarding the artwork and it needs to be studied to better understand its material, production technique as well as its need for conservation. The purpose and goal of this case study is to investigate the material and production techniques of the artwork and present suggestions for future treatment and conservation. The study uses a combination of documentation, observations and analytical techniques to examine the artwork. Five samples from the artwork were analysed by X-ray fluorescence to investigate chemical composition and to make cross sections for stratigraphic analysis. The artwork and the samples were also observed in visible and UV-light. The study found that the artwork is made from lime plaster. The results from analyses and observation suggest that the surface has been painted with a lime-based paint. However, results also point to more than one type of paint and in some areas more than one layer. The stratigraphy suggest that it is made up of a minimum of two layers. The damages on the artwork are extensive and the plaster is fragile. Some areas indicate that previous damages have been treated fillings and repairs. This study suggests at minimum a consolidation treatment of the plaster to secure already damaged areas with regular monitoring and cleaning to prevent further damage.
