Association between cognitive impairment and frailty in elderly persons

Abstract
Introduction: The group of geriatric patients constantly grows as people grow increasingly older. Former studies in the geriatric field have achieved great progress in developing an evidence-based approach to the geriatric person, one of the widely used methods being Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment. Additionally, former studies have found associations between frailty and cognitive impairment, and several pathogeneses and etiologies have been proposed as underlying mechanisms. Further studies are needed, though, to delineate the aetiology of frailty and in the future provide new interventions for the frail elderly patients. Objective: This study aims to assess which cognitive domains are associated with frailty in the acutely ill elderly patient. Methods: We included 20 patients into the study. The subjects were assessed with phenotype frailty model, Katz-ADL and MoCA and the results were analysed through Pearson’s Chi Square test to assess any statistically significant association between frailty, global cognition as described through MoCA, subdomains of MoCA, Katz-ADL, and education length. Results: Our findings propose an association between frailty and global cognition, executive functioning, Katz-ADL, and the length of education. Conclusion: Our results propose that persons with cognitive impairment, especially in the domain of executive functioning, and a poorer Katz-ADL Index score, are prone to frailty and thus should be comprehensively assessed. We did not find associations between frailty and <12 years of education. More studies are needed to further study the associations between frailty, cognitive domains, and education level.
