Abstract
This thesis investigates how European startups transform regulatory environmental challenges into strategic business opportunities and by doing this, effectively turn compliance into a source of competitive advantage. In response to evolving environmental regulations such as the European Green Deal and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), early-stage ventures are required to adapt and innovate. While traditional perspectives view compliance as a burden, this research explores how environmental-oriented startups leverage regulation as a source for opportunity recognition, innovation, and strategic differentiation. Grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV), theories of opportunity recognition and different entrepreneurship strategies, the study adopts a qualitative research approach using expert interviews with founders of environmentally-focused startups in different EU industries. Together with secondary data, the research examines how startups identify and exploit regulatory changes, and how their entrepreneurial mindset enables them to integrate environmental sustainability into their business models. The findings reveal that startups employ different strategies to navigate regulations, with a clear tendency toward proactive engagement among founders with strong internal sustainability values. Moreover, the startups use their agility, stakeholder collaboration, and experimentation to transform compliance into innovation and market differentiation. The study contributes to the academic discourse by enriching theories of opportunity creation and strategic entrepreneurship under regulatory pressure. Practically, it offers insights for founders, incubators, and policymakers on how to design more supportive environments that encourage innovation-driven compliance and environmentally-sustainable growth in the European startup ecosystem.
