In recent decades, the second hand market has gone from being a stigmatized choice to becoming a trendy form of consumption. Historically, second hand sales have been associated with charity and non-profit organizations that support environmentally friendly consumption by giving products a new life. Now it is a commercial arena, where financial gain has become a central driving force. Digital developments have changed the way we humans shop and consume, which includes the rise of the online second hand market. Previous research has focused on how various sustainability aspects and digital transformations have affected consumption patterns, but few studies have explored how the change reflects changes and society's values. This study aims to examine the change in the second hand market, from being characterized by charity and brick-and-mortar shops to being dominated by digital, for-profit platforms, and to analyze how this development affects consumption patterns and consumer behaviour. Using the PESTEL model, the market will be analyzed from a macro perspective, with a complement to the Stimuli Response Model that examines the individual's behavior on a micro level. Together, these models complement each other to create an overall picture of consumer behavior and its impact in a broad societal context. A qualitative research method has been used during the study to enable in-depth understanding of a consumer's choice. A total of twelve people were interviewed and by using semi-structured interviews space was given for the respondents to express their perspectives. This means that second hand consumption is largely driven by economic motives, where consumers see it as an affordable alternative to newly produced goods. At the same time, the results showed that the technological shift in the form of access to platforms around the clock simplifies purchases, which can result in impulse purchases. This in turn can create a paradox where consumption increases and leads to overconsumption.sv
