I väntan på ett narrativ som gryr: En analys av kulturens plats inför Norra Masthuggets omvandling

Abstract

Gothenburg is a city in that is currently undergoing large changes and in some aspects a significant rebranding. In Norra Masthugget, a hub for cultural industries and workers in creative fields, the city plans to erect a number of skyscrapers to house commercial businesses. This essay investigates how the city of Gothenburg's new narrative of Norra Masthugget can be understood and related to the narratives told by the cultural workers in the area, and what issues connected to the urban development the cultural workers identify as important to them. The essay reveals that there is a discursive displacement of the non-public cultural industries in the area and that this threatens the existence of the current hub. The essay also detects a discord between the narrative as it’s told by the cultural workers and the narrative of the buildings the city aspires to erect.
