TRANSNATIONAL POLITICAL ATTITUDES OF MUSLIMS IN EUROPE - Case of Turks in Germany

Abstract

Transnational voting behavior of individuals with a migration background has recently become a topic of discussion. Muslim minority groups in European countries are also subject to this phenomenon. At times, different political views are observed in home and host countries. For example, Turks in Europe support the conservative right in Turkey while predominantly supporting left parties in European countries. This thesis presents Muslim identity as a common motivation to understand this complex situation and tests this theoretical argument with two cross-sectional studies and one experimental design. The results are mixed. While Muslim identity significantly leads to support for right-wing in the home country, the results are contrasting in the country of residence.
