LES CARACTERISTIQUES DE L’ALTERNANCE CODIQUE ET DE L’EMPRUNT CHEZ LES FRANÇAIS INSTALLÉS EN SUEDE

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to identify and measure the factors behind code-switching and borrowing. This study is based on 74 French nationals living in Sweden who participated voluntarily in a survey that was put online. The research questions that we intend to answer in this study are: What are the language practices of the French nationals living in Sweden - in particular in terms of the use of code-switching and borrowing and is there a common bilingual practice model? Are the language choices of individuals’ influenced by external (the environment) or internal (individual features) elements? The results show that the individual profile of informants influences language mixing only when individuals have excellent communicative skills in three or more languages. It is the environment and the interlocutors that most impact the informants’ choice to integrate (consciously or not) linguistic items in Swedish in their French addresses.
