Abstract

This thesis adress the procedure for replacing the sill in south swedish timber-framed buildings, (also named korsvirke in Swedish, bindingsværk in Danish and fackwerk in German) with a focus on lifting the construction and securing the compartment filling. This knowledge has been difficult to access as it is not described to any great extent in the Swedish or Danish published literature. The purpose of the thesis is thus to document through interviews of five active construction craftsmen their choice of method and tools when replacing the sill. The craftsmen are carefully selected on the basis of their experience of timber restoration focusing on swedish traditional techniques. The intention has been to capture the traditional craftsmanship in the use of materials and workmanship. This is to minimize distortion of our cultural history and a means to carry on the tradition.
