VARFÖR SLÖJDAR DU? En kvalitativ studie om anledningarna till varför människor idag väljer att slöjda.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate why people today engage in handicraft. Have the reasons for practicing handicraft changed over the years or have they been the same over time? To examine this I have compared what there is to find in the literature about the subject, with the answers that I got from communicating with people that are engaged in handicraft today. The study of literature shows that in the past it was necessary to practice handicraft to get the items needed in your own household or to sell for money or trade for other items. But even in the past, when we had to make what we needed ourselves, people took time to do the extra to make the objects beautiful and personal. Today, we can buy what we need in all kinds of different stores and people can choose to do handicrafts of other reasons. The informers were asked about their reasons for practicing handicraft today. The three most common answers from the responders were: it creates a feeling of well-being, it is fun and also by doing handicraft they can express their creativity. The conclusion of this minor study is that there are both similarities and differences in the reasons why some people choose to engage in handicrafts in the past and today.
