Abstract

Description

Background: Psychiatric diagnosis among adolescents is increasing, and this requires complex care interventions. Tactile massage has been highlighted as a non-pharmacological intervention that focuses on body close-touch care as a complement to medical treatment. Tactile massage is described as a touch that stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, activates C-fibers in the body, leading to stress reduction, increased relaxation, and improved self-awareness. The concept of Interconnectedness is used as a care concept as it best defines the interaction between feelings, emotions, social relationships and physiological relaxation. Aim: The purpose of this study is to highlight young people's experiences of tactile massage in psychiatric diagnosis. Method: The study is a qualitative interview study based on 16 semi-structured interviews. The participants were adolescents between 15–18 years old who were treated in child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient care in western Sweden. The adolescents were recruited using classification of healthcare interventions (KVÅ) codes, as some of them had received or were undergoing treatment. The interviews were analyzed using Braun and Clarke (2008) thematic analysis. The analysis process was carried out using six steps in which meaningful units were coded. This led to one main theme associated five sub-themes. Results: The analysis of 16 interviews with young people with a mental diagnosis showed that tactile massage provided a multifaceted experience. Before tactile massage, the young people had experienced prolonged stress, hyperactivity, mental health issues, and neuropsychiatric vulnerability, which were expressed through constant worry, impulsivity, difficulties with self- regulation, and bodily tension. The participants described that although the positive effects of tactile massage were short-lived, they still provided a sense of well-being, increased self- awareness, greater security in being touched, and improved body awareness. Conclusion: Knowledge of tactile massage is still limited. Existing studies have small sample sizes and often lack control groups, which limits generalizability (Robertz et al., 2024). More randomized studies with larger sample sizes are needed to explore the effect of tactile massage as a complement to medical treatment.
