Abstract

This thesis investigates the deterioration of wax relief works by Lea Ahlborn, held at The Royal Coin Cabinet, and explores appropriate conservation methods. The study begins with a literature review presenting Ahlborn’s life and work, as well as the historical use and production of wax relief and medal-making. Gas chromatography was used to identify the type of wax, followed by an analysis of the physical and chemical properties of beeswax. Existing conservation methods for cleaning and consolidation are reviewed. A practical conservation treatment was carried out on one object, forming the basis for recommendations on preservation and storage. The aim is to provide a foundation for informed conservation decisions and to contribute to knowledge about beeswax as a material.
