Abstract

This publication explores how reporting guidelines can be further developed to enhance transparency, reproducibility, and scientific relevance in person-centred research. Reporting guidelines constitute a key tool for systematically describing study design, conduct, and findings, thereby enabling critical appraisal and strengthening the reliability of research. At the same time, limitations are identified in current guidelines regarding the integration of patient and public involvement, despite its growing importance for research quality and societal relevance. Patient and public involvement refers to the active participation of patients, caregivers, and members of the public across different phases of the research process, in partnership with researchers. Such an approach facilitates greater alignment with relevant needs and perspectives. In this publication, adapted versions of established reporting guidelines are presented, in which this dimension is integrated through a person-centred lens. These are illustrated in this publication both in proposed modifications to existing guidelines and case descriptions from research projects. Furthermore, a framework is introduced to support the operationalisation of person-centred principles throughout the research process, with particular emphasis on narrative approaches, partnership, and documentation. The publication also highlights the need for greater conceptual clarity and proposes adjustments to reporting guidelines for intervention studies. Finally, the publication discusses how further development of reporting guidelines can contribute to increased methodological rigour, relevance, and impact in research, and support the knowledge-based development of healthcare systems.
