Abstract
This essay explores the creative potential of using traditional building craft as a design tool in contemporary architecture. It also examines the use of creative practice-based approaches within building craft sciences. Through the building of a spatial sculpture, using contemporary traditional timber craft, this study seeks to look closer at the work of building while simultaneously designing. As the building and designing work progresses, material and immaterial aspects of the process are documented through sketches combined with notes. This is motivated by the understanding that our conception of contemporary use of traditional building craft, is not only influenced by how it looks, but also by how it’s made. The findings suggest that building craft can be used as a creative tool in figuration and has unique features as a design tool. They also indicate that using creative practice-based approaches in building craft has the potential to aid the study of synergetic aspects in the field of craft sciences.
