Abstract

This thesis is a work about the painting technique called Chipolin. The work is aiming to bring new knowledge about the painting method and fill the gap of information we have today. How common have the technique been and what materials have been used are some of the questions that the thesis aiming to answer. If one understands the technique one can understand the process of conservation. This work seeks to be good for practical use in future conservation – restoration as well for works in art history. The study is an art historical technique research, in which techniques and materials along with art history and aesthetics gets the same space. The work is basded on an investigation of historical sources along with literature about art and craftsmanship with focus on two historical books: Jean Felix Wating book Le peintre et Doreur Wernisseur and Pierre François Tingrys book The Painter and varnisher`s Guide. These books seems to be the only ones that explain the technology and the craftsmanship in details. Furthermore reconstructions of the painting technique along with a study object the Eremitage castle north of Copenhagen, has been a part of the investigation of Chipolin technique. The conclusions of this study are that Chipolin is a distemper technique that can, in its simplest form, be sorted as varnished distemper. However, it has a noticeable connection to the European lacquer art. This connection leads to the sorting of Chipolin painting as a technique in a twilight zone of distemper and lacquer.
