Bildlärares förutsättningar att påverka materialtillgången i undervisningen - En kvalitativ studie

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how art teachers in lower and upper secondary school are able to influence the availability of materials in art education. The study also aims to highlight how material availability affects teachers’ didactic choices, as well as to identify how organizational and economic factors shape the material resources. This study employs a qualitative method, based on interviews with six art teachers. The interviews were analyzed through a thematic inductive analysis and are theoretically anchored in a sociocultural perspective and in practice architectures. The results show that teachers’ opportunities to influence material availability are limited by the school’s organizational structures, where economic conditions and leadership priorities largely determine the resources provided. Material availability was found to directly affect teachers’ didactic choices, thereby shaping teaching content. At the same time, the study shows how teachers develop various strategies to cope with material deficiency, including the use of alternative materials and other adaptations. The conclusion is that the material conditions of the art subject are not only a practical matter, but also affect teachers’ professional agency as well as students’ opportunities to develop subject knowledge and achieve the objectives of art education.
