Abstract
Household consumption is an important component of the economic activity in Sweden as well as in Europe. During the Covid-19 pandemic, household consumption was substantially affected, and previous research suggests that these effects may have continued even after the pandemic. Consumption decisions are influenced by multiple factors within the economic theory, including income expectations, uncertainty, savings and additional external economic shocks. The purpose of this study is to investigate changes in household consumption after the covid-19 pandemic compared to the period before the pandemic, and to examine if those changes have remained in the post-pandemic period. This study indicates that the household consumption decreased in Sweden during the pandemic compared to the years before. Moreover, the findings indicate that additional factors such as high inflation and energy crisis may have contributed to the decline in consumption, which might lead to a potential longterm decrease in domestic consumption in an integrated European economy. This analysis supports the economic theories presented in the study and contributes to previous research by indicating that changes in household consumption following the covid-19 pandemic have been more persistent than initially anticipated.
