Abstract

The practice of veganism is becoming more and more common. While feminist theories show veganism to be anti-patriarchal in nature, new research has indicated that both hegemonic and hybrid masculinities could be performed and sustained through a vegan lifestyle. The aim of this study was to explore what the implication of a masculinised veganism would be for veganism as an ideology of anti-oppression. Drawing upon critical feminist theory and previous gender and human-animal studies, this research focuses on the intersection of veganism and gender practice in a contemporary Swedish context, through a critical discourse analysis of several blog posts and editorials. The results of the study indicate the presence of both a new masculine veganism and gender neutral animal ethics. The intertextual meeting of these vegan practices implicates that veganism has become an arena for both the reproduction of the ideals of hegemonic masculinity and a practice of hybrid masculinities. This in turn indicates reproduction of speciesism and patriarchal gender structure.
