Crocus sativus, saffron, is a plant largely cultivated in countries that are known to have a climate different to the one in Sweden. There is proof though, in old horticultural literature, that the plant hasn’t been as exotic historically as we might think. There are a few saffron growers in southern of Sweden and on the island of Gotland today– 2026. They are not only cultivating the saffron itself, but also the cultural history of saffron in Sweden. In this study we are getting to know about their differently sized open field- cultivations and if they are picking the saffron flowers by hand or with help from robots. The study is based on litterature studies and qualitative interviews.
