Abstract

The main objective of this study is to analyze how Dagens Nyheter portrays sexual violence eight years after the #MeToo movement through a qualitative content analysis. The study is based on two research questions: RQ1. How is sexual violence portrayed in Dagens Nyheter today? RQ2. How is sexual violence presented as a societal phenomenon? The study is grounded in framing and postfeminist theory as its theoretical framework. Using Entman’s framing theory and postfeminist theory as an analytical tool, the study seeks to illuminate how sexual violence is framed in news content. The analysis examines how sexual violence is framed through problem definitions, responsibility, moral evaluation, and proposed solutions. Postfeminist theory is applied to identify individualization and potential reactions to feminist progress in news reporting. The material was collected through the database Mediearkivet during the period 1 October 2024 to 1 October 2025. With a generic purpose sampling method, nine articles were chosen for the qualitative content analysis. The main results of this study show that sexual violence is primarily framed as a legal issue, that empathies the reporting, prosecution, and verdicts. Before verdict, coverage tends to morally evaluate the violence, while confirmed verdicts place responsibility on individual cases and perpetrators. The reporting prioritizes the perpetrators' background and emphasises individual explanations which limit structural perspectives.
