Medeltida träsnideri. En närstudie av repstavarna i Södra Råda gamla kyrka

Abstract

This study aims to investigate which methods, material and tools that could have been used at the making of the carved ropes in Södra råda old church. The church was built in the early 14th century. In the year 2001, the church was burnt down to the ground. In 2002 and a decision was made to reconstruct the church in full- scale and the work is still ongoing. To answer the questions about how the carved rope was made three different kind of sources has been used. Preserved archive material concerning the carved rope in Södra Råda old church has been analyzed, other similar still existing medieval carved ropes has been examined and a practical experiment has been made. The aim of the study has been to advance our understanding and our knowledge about the medieval woodcarving by combining different kind of previously unexplored sources.
