Abstract

This thesis examines young adults and their individual experiences of the fear of death and death anxiety. We also sort out what power it holds over them and how it affects their identities and everyday life. By using qualitative methods and with the perspectives of terror management theory, Foucaults power theory and Goffmans theory “Presentation of self” we have been able to identify and analyze our informants' individual fears and strategies of coping with death. The previous research has been of great benefit to this study, as we have been able to combine it with the theories and thus used it throughout our essay. The results show that the informants’ fears and coping mechanisms are mostly shared with each other and go in line with, specifically, terror management theory. It also shows that their fears hold a power over them, determines their choices in life and their identities.
