Abstract

This thesis focuses on the construction of drystone walls in the county of Småland, as well as their historical value and significance to the county. In Riksantikvarieämbetets Plattform Kulturhistorisk värdering och urval, a directory for historical evaluations of buildings and objects, the first clause is to describe the object and its history. When trying to do this, the lack of literature focusing on the constructional elements of drystone walls and their history became an issue and is what prompted the writing of this thesis. With a study of different handbooks, a compilation of the constructional elements of the walls were put together. As well as a collection of important historical events that affected the building of drystone walls, an inventory form was created and tested on four walls in the parish of Hälleberga. With the information given by the village association and their literature the years of construction and the connection to different historical events was compiled to form a comprehensive view of each wall. The conclusions and observations made during the fieldwork prompted a rework of the form as well as the addition of an informational page to assist in the field. The hope is that the finished form can be used for documentation, restoration work and maintenance by craftsmen, researchers and other individuals.
