Abstract

The transport sector is one of the biggest pollutants in the European Union. In relation to transport policies and environmental policies, intermodal transportation solutions are of high relevance to establish a sustainable transport sector for the future. Intermodality which is defined as smooth transition between transport modes is a key figure for how modal shares are divided between the modes of transportation. The aim of this bachelor´s thesis is to examine the research gap whether policies intended for a specific transport mode affects each other in relation to EU policies intended for intermodality. The three research questions selected for this study is as followed: How is intermodality presented in policy documents intended for transport policy. How does transport policies relate to the EU sustainability goals? How does EU policy formulations affect transport modes potential for collaboration towards sustainable mobility solutions? By examining policy documents from European Commission, with a qualitative content analysis. The concluded analysed material give some indication that the European Commission prefers to move modal share to more environmentally friendly transportation modes which uses electricity as propellant. Concluding the study’s aim, the results show that all transport modes need to participate and also where intramodality is of most importance to reach the sustainability goals in EU.
