Abstract

Concrete is the most widespread building material in modern construction and has been crucial to the development of modern architecture, over the past two centuries. However, it has gained a bad reputation, partly due to its association with the construction boom of the 1960s and 70s and partly due to environmental concerns. From environmental and conservational perspectives, concrete constructions have measurable value; A concrete building represents a valuable resource, containing embedded energy and natural resources. Therefore, buildings can be viewed as both a resource and a repository of energy that would be wasted if demolished. The unique properties and construction methods of concrete are considered culturally and historically significant and tell a story of industrial progress and architectural innovation. Therefore, concrete should be treated with special attention in conservation contexts. Given these challenges, the thesis examines the difficulties encountered in concrete repairs. Additionally, it explores how craftsmanship can influence the expression of a repair, ensuring it does not disrupt the overall impression. In order to answer the research question, interviews with craftspeople working with concrete restoration were conducted focusing on challenges concerning craftsmanship, sustainability and conservation-ideology. Experiments were performed to understand the possibilities of imitating concrete surfaces through craft methods. The study shows that the challenges faced by craftsmen in concrete restoration encompass various aspects, including aesthetic, technical, and sustainability related elements. A significant hurdle is achieving visual coherence between restored concrete and its original appearance, involving color matching, texture, and patination. Experimentation with different processing methods, documented through test surfaces, sheds light on concrete's properties and manipulation possibilities. While the study show that imitation of original surfaces may not perfectly replicate them due to material and tool variations, the methods presented in the study can be useful in repair scenarios.
