Abstract
Due to inherently poor adhesion between cold paint and glass, flaking paint is one of the most common conservation issues in reverse glass paintings. Re-adhering flaking paint in these objects is challenging, as the adhesive used needs to have both desirable adhesive and optical properties, more so than on substrates where the adhesive is less visible. This thesis aims to contribute to existing knowledge of readhesion of oil paint on glass, while also examining whether the surface characteristics of various glass substrates affect adhesion. With a starting point in a visual and tactile examination of damaged reverse glass paintings in the collection of Kalmar County Museum, an experimental study was designed to evaluate the adhesive and optical properties of four synthetic resins and dispersions commonly used in conservation: Paraloid B-72, Regalrez 1094, Laropal A81 and Lascaux Medium for Consolidation. The results were interpreted using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) and a semi-quantitative Scotch tape test. Laropal A81 was deemed the most suitable overall, however plenty of factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing an adhesive.
