Abstract

Aim of thesis The aim of the thesis is to understand how the issue of uranium mining is framed in ÖstersundsPosten, the biggest local newspaper in the county of Jämtland, where one of Sweden’s largest uranium deposits has been found. This is done by examining how uranium mining itself is framed, who gets to speak about it, and how the framing has changed over time. Theory We use framing to analyse how the placement of words, pictures and actors in specific parts of the texts can contribute to how uranium mining is presented in Östersunds-Posten. Method Quantitative content analysis is used to examine a total of 193 articles from the years 2005, 2010, 2018 and 2025. The content analysis is focused on the presence of evaluative words, arguments and actors in certain parts of the texts, most importantly the headlines, photographs and quotes. Results The results show that uranium mining is framed by negativeness, especially surrounding the possible effects on the water in Jämtland. The results also show that uranium mining is framed by politicians rather than geologists or representatives of the Swedish authorities.
